Targeted traffic consists of visitors to your site who are attracted to your niche and willing to buy your information, products, or services. These visitors are already qualified and are characterized by a comparatively high likelihood of appreciating the importance of what you offer and making a purchase. Everybody with a website is in search of targeted traffic. Why? It's simple. That's where the profits are. All other traffic is of a lower quality since it is comprised of those who may only have a superficial interest in your site's topic or niche. Targeted traffic is comprised of buyers. Other traffic consists of lookers. While several writers label targeted traffic a marketing strategy, it is not a marketing strategy. Rather, it is caused by a superior marketing strategy. It frequently requires time, effort, and money to drive targeted traffic to your website. The most desired way to get targeted traffic is to rank close to the top of the search results in the primary search engines for keyword phrases that are associated with your niche. A number of optimization strategies exist for on page (like keyword density) and off page (like getting links from other sites) optimization. And, it is frequently challenging to make the top for especially competitive keyword phrases. Everyone else is optimizing their pages and getting backlinks as well. Of course, when you reach the top, the actual traffic you get from being in the "top 10" is free to you. And, that's the most competitive price for anything. The quickest way to obtain targeted traffic is to employ pay per click ads on the main search engines. With pay per click ads you are able to select the keyword phrases you want and steer traffic to an appropriate page on your site. The downside of pay per click is that the cost to you for every click is often quite high and you are competing with all the others in that niche. So, profits are often extremely narrow. A further way to generate targeted traffic is to post ads on a variety of networks. Of course Craigslist and Backpage are very popular places to post ads of all types. You can use your personal profile page on social networks like MySpace and Facebook to promote yourself and your products. Twitter is increasingly popular as a place to gain followers and do promotion. Since you're looking at this article, you should grasp that article marketing is a developing strategy for driving targeted traffic to your website. Articles steer traffic in two ways. First, the links in the resource box at the end of an article can encourage interested readers to visit your site. Second, the links in the resource box are picked up by search engines and help improve your ranking. And, as your articles get placed on additional sites you get an even bigger benefit from the viral character of articles. It should be obvious now, there are many techniques to steer targeted traffic to your site. This is the difficulty for many people who are new to Internet marketing. They spend a little time here, a little time there, and pretty soon nothing is functioning very well. So, they become disheartened and in desperation buy one "secret" after another to get their desired targeted traffic. The optimal solution, and there's no secret to it, is to give full attention to one technique until it is functioning well. So, what is the best strategy to start out with? I believe article marketing is a good choice. You can start writing articles right away and distribute them to article directories. And, you can do this with no up front expenses if you desire. Your articles will start drawing people to your site within a week. And, long term, as they are chosen by website owners and ezine publishers, you will see steady growth in targeted traffic. And, that is the goal.
