Tailgating: The 5 Golden Rules of Tailgating

By: Wellington W

Tailgating is a wonderful time to share your fan loyalty, stories of the good ol’ days, and great food. As not all tailgating parties are created equal we would like to share the 7 golden rules of tailgating. These are meant to enhance your tailgating experience and help you to enjoy yourself. These rules are given in no particular order, but all will help in having a better time tailgating.

The tailgaters golden rule number 1: Organization is key have a check off list

“Does anyone know where the ketchup is…” “Has anyone seen the barbeque charcoals…” “Hey Phil, you remembered the meat right…”
Any experienced tailgaters will cringe at the thought of those statements. You have to remember that true tailgaters plan there weekends, months, and sometimes years around the tailgating parties. One forgotten item and the whole experience is shot. To avoid this we recommend as the golden rule number one is to be organized. I have seen many tailgating lists, and not everyone is going to bring the same thing. Make your list and go through it extensively the night before you leave.
As you start to set some standards you might want to go to the extent of laminating the checklist. This way you can take a dry erase marker out and check off each one of the lists so that you know it is completed.

The tailgaters golden rule number 2: Toilet paper is a necessity, not merely an option

Toilet paper is a necessity, and not merely an option. In fact toilet paper should be at the top of your checklist. You might think that the local porta potty will be sufficient, but to be blunt – after about 1,000 fans go to the bathroom there will not be much left for the next victim. Bring the paper, keep it safe, and use as needed.

The tailgaters golden rule number 3: Leave early to find a good spot

The diehard tailgaters will tell you that if the game starts on Saturday, you might want to leave on Tuesday. But seriously, if you are going to enjoy the true art of tailgating at least arrive early enough to get a good spot, a time enough to get the meat cooked. We recommend that if the game starts in the afternoon to arrive at your tailgating spot around 7:00 a.m. This should give you enough time to have a great experience, however if you want to get a true taste of a tailgater then come a day or two before.

The tailgaters golden rule number 4: Zip lock bags

Zip lock bags are a requirement if you are planning to cook, marinate, or grill on a tailgating party. Yes you can store your meat in Tupperware, but if you want to properly marinate your meat I would suggest that you put the sauce and meat in a great zip lock bag. This will ensure that the sauce gets everywhere, and keep it all clean. Zip lock bags also don’t take up a lot of space. They are also so much easier to clean up. And after the game and you have had your party the last thing that you want to do is spend about an hour cleaning up.

The tailgaters golden rule number 5: Bring lots of food to share

Tailgating is America’s last neighborhood. One of the big reasons for that statement is the food. Everyone shares and shares alike. There is nothing wrong with bringing more than you can eat for two reasons: First, tailgating leftovers are the best that there is. Especially with a good piece of pulled pork, marinated stake…oh man, don’t get me started. Second, if you have extra you can share it with the other tailgaters. Many long time friendships have started due to swapping food and recipes. The atmosphere is to share and share alike, so come prepared and have a good time.
