Small World After All

By: Fred Jones

People view this world as a big world; a world with many different countries, separated by great distances and different languages. It was difficult to communicate back in the days, where many misunderstanding took place between different cultures. But through improvement in communication, specifically the internet, the gap now seems smaller and in turn, the world is smaller than before.

Communication is the process of conveying information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a media, such as words through speech and writing, pictures, music, etc. in which the communicated information is understood by both sender and the receiver. It would only work if both parties know the same language or understand the same gestures. If both the sender and the receiver have the different idea for a certain media there would be a lot of misunderstanding, such as the sound 'hi' carries a meaning of greeting in English, but it means yes in Japanese. Even some gestures are different, for example, a hand gesture that makes a ring shape with the thumb and the index figure while stretching out the other three fingers to mean okay in some countries mean money or coins in others.

With all the differences, people have been communicating none the less. People have been learning languages and cultures through people from the different countries or through people who have visited the country. And ultimately, with the introduction and wide distribution of the internet, it has become easier to communicate with people far away through different methods. While only communicating using a certain language would be limited, people can communicate online using pictures, diagrams, music, and even videos. Many mediums can be used to communicate thoughts across countries and would have less conflicts as well as more input from many nations.

There is a unique way of communication online called social network service. It focuses on building online communities of people from different parts of the earth, where they can not only share information to the public, but interests and activities to look for people with same interests. It is a powerful new way to communicate and share information. People from different countries with who speak different languages with same interests can bond and communicate through online translators and become one.

Social network service websites like MySpace, Xanga or WetPaint each have their own unique platform and interests. Although all networks generally allow users to create a profile for themselves with similar information, they concentrate on different things, for example, MySpace and Xanga concentrates on personal bonding and relationships with people while WetPaint concentrates on information sharing through common interests using the wiki platform. Though most websites concentrate on relationship between users, certain communities like WetPaint are made to easy access to more accurate and concentrated information than a regular search engine since a community of experts in the desired field is available to you in the community. Through the improvement of methods to communicate, the world today really seems smaller. Who knows what will happen next.
