Plan your Christmas shopping early

By: Theo Swan

When Christmas is closing in, many people get stressed out just thinking about all the gifts they need to buy. Figuring out what to buy for everyone is – for some people – one of the toughest things during the winter, while others have little or no trouble knowing what to get. The cliché "Thinking outside the box" is somewhat suiting here; don’t just look at the obvious – there are many other more surprising gifts you can get for your friends and family.

The most common mistake people make when shopping Christmas gifts is they underestimate the time it will take. The actual shopping isn’t very time consuming, but figuring out what to buy for everybody can take quite a bit of time. Taking a moment or two – before Christmas is a fact – to figure out what to get for each and everyone will save you much time in the end.

Another timesaving aspect of thinking it all thru before you go out to shop for gifts is the possibility of buying most – if not all – gifts online. If you figure out what to buy for everyone, finding the same items to a cheaper price online will save you not only time, but a bit of money as well.

Buying Christmas gifts for children is perhaps the easiest part of all Christmas shopping, they tend to get happy and exited over virtually any toy or game. A good – and modern – approach to this is to stay clear of the gender biased gifts; Guns for boys and dolls for girls. While these gifts may fall out well in a short perspective, this is an excellent time to do some good; erasing the differences between the genders.

Another thing one should think of before buying gifts for kids is what their parents will think about the present. While you might think a violent computer game is a killer gift, the parents may think otherwise. The same applies to many gifts, not only those of a violent nature; make sure you think things thru before you make a boo-boo.

In a similar way, many men make a fool of themselves during Christmas times. Many are the women who have cheerfully opened a huge, neatly wrapped gift only to find a new vacuum cleaner inside. A vacuum cleaner is hardly a gift; it is more of a statement regarding who does what in the home. Just like you shouldn’t buy gender based toys for kids, you should try to find a little more imaginative gift for your wife.

If you, on the other hand, are looking for a perfect gift for your husband; a vacuum cleaner might be a great way of saying "I need more help around the house", but it is rarely an appreciated gift.

As with so many other things, planning is the key to making good choices. Rather than going out and aimlessly shopping for Christmas gifts, you should sit down and plan your Christmas shopping. Doing this will not only save you time and money; you stand a much greater chance of giving people gifts they really want and/or need.
