Pectoral Implants Can Enhance the Appearance of Your Chest Muscles

By: Dave Stringham

Pectoral implants, most frequently selected for use by men, are becoming an ever more popular choice to increase the appearance of chest muscles. Many candidates have tried through diet and exercise to increase chest muscle mass but are unable to develop the desired size and shape to the extent to which they want. Likewise, some people are attempting to correct a birth defect or the results from injury that may affect the appearance of the pectoral muscles. Pectoral implants add volume to the chest because the solid silicone material is inserted behind the real muscle. Therefore, anyone considering the procedure should be aware that implants do not increase the amount of muscle definition. Muscle tone, body fat and skin elasticity contribute to the actual definition of the chest muscles.

As with all surgeries, possible candidates should be well informed, consider all risks and follow the advice of their physician before and after the surgery. Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon any questions that you may have in order to have all of the available information regarding the procedure.

Solid silicone implants used in the procedure are safe, flexible, and durable. Many of the historical risks associated with silicone do not apply to solid silicone implants. Studies show no correlation between silicone and any diseases, and furthermore, the implants are not made of a gel. The size and shape of the implant will be determined by you and the doctor. Small incisions will be used to insert the implant below the pectoral muscle, and will generally be inconspicuous.

You are encouraged to reduce the amount of chest workouts for one or two weeks prior to surgery, and for at least one month following surgery. The procedure is an outpatient surgery, allowing you to return to the comfort of your own home on the same day. Scarring is minimal and frequently well faded after four weeks.

Movement of the implant (also called displacement) is rare, but can occur. Most times this is corrected very easily with a follow up procedure. Likewise, the removal of an implant is also a simple procedure that can be done if you are unhappy with the implant for any reason.

Standard pectoral implants are not a solution for irregular chest wall shape. Uneven chest wall structures, which can be caused by injury or birth conditions, may require more specialized procedures. A qualified, experienced plastic surgeon will be able to specifically address your needs and outline possible solutions.
