Increasing Your Safety with a Lift Chair

By: Sean Staples

The ability to get up after having been sitting by yourself, without help, can be exceedingly dangerous for a good number of individuals. Frequently, this is because the individual suffers from a mobility related disorder, such as muscular dystrophy. Not being able to get up on your own is generally a big hindrance and often causes in a reduction of independence. To aid in this process of sitting and standing more secure, a lot of people choose to invest in a lift chair.
A lift recliner is a home lifting device which is used to assist in making safer to stand and sit. The lift chair operates similarly to a recliner, with several important differences. The most notable incongruity is that the chair has a strong lifting mechanism that lifts the chair off the ground. This makes it simpler to exit out of the chair and into a upright position. Lift chairs are also used to allow an individual to sit down in a safe manner.
While usually the number one reason a lift recliner is used is to make it easier to stand or sit, these chairs are also extremely snug chairs. The footrest and backrest can be extended and, in today's lift recliners, are operated using a hand control that connects to an electric motor in the base of the chair. This remote control is not only used to control the backrest and footrest, but is also responsible for allowing the chair to lower and raise the lifting aid into the air. The remote control is designed to be easy to use. The buttons are big, well marked, and separated well enough apart that you do not need to be worried about pushing several at once. Even though many remotes have more than four, the device is usually designed in a manner that allows the whole chair to be controlled by only two buttons.
As an added feature some people decide to invest in a lift recliner which has a built in heat and massage system. This can be used to help sooth tired joints, help the chairs user relax, and improve blood circulation. In many cases this is an extra feature, but there are several chairs that come with these features standard. Most quality lift chairs also have a built in battery backup system. They only require a 9-volt battery, which is the same type used in a fire alarms, to raise the chair. The battery will need to be replaced once every year or after it is used.
Finding the best type of lift chair is a big decision and there are a lot of different models available. One way that chairs are classified is by its users weight and height. It is essential that you adhere to the height and weight classification of the mobility lifting aid. Failing to follow the stated classification of the lift chair can result in injury.
People that use lift recliners are able to greatly reduce the chance of injury and the chance of a fall. These chairs are an affordable alternative to paying for a nurse to help you and will help to increase your safety.
