Improving Your Barbecue

By: David Roth

There are a lot of things to do at a barbecue or other family get-together. Naturally there is a lot of good food and people are going to want to eat and drink. In addition, a lot of people play games at these occasions. You might even play them, too. If you don't already play games at your barbecues because you aren't sure what games would be best for all your family and friends, you might want to consider the bean bag game. Some people call it the bean bag toss. Others call it the Cornhole game. It got that name because the original bags were filled with dried corn. They've also sometimes been filled with dried beans. Most of the modern ones are filled with plastic pellets. It was changed because corn and beans can swell and mildew if they get wet. Plastic doesn't have that problem. Usually, people will buy their bean bag game. However, if they really want to, they can make one. This is something that friends and family can do together, too, which makes playing it even more enjoyable. Something that people have made with their own hands often has a lot more meaning that something that they bought.

At your barbecue, you can play the bean bag game and spend time laughing and joking with people who might not have been able to participate in other games. Frisbee, horseshoes, badminton, and other similar games are often too demanding for elderly people. Young kids also can't play them because they either aren't coordinated enough or they're too small and not yet athletic. That can make young children cranky and elderly people feel left-out. Avoiding those kinds of problems is easy with the bean bag game, since everyone can play it and enjoy it. The simplicity of the game is part of why so many people like it and why it's so very popular at get-togethers of all kinds. This includes barbecues, birthday parties, and tailgating parties. Many college kids play it because they can carry the board around so easily in the bed of their truck or the trunk of their car. The board is two feet by four feet, and most larger car trunks will accommodate that. People who really love the game almost always have it available to them and the friends and family members that they get together with.

If you're planning a barbecue and you want to play the bean bag game, the rules are very simple. Players toss the bean bags one at a time at the game board, which has a hole in it. Bags that land (and stay) on the board and don't go in the hole are worth points. Bags that go in the hole are worth more points. If the bags miss or fall off they don't score anything. The first person or team to reach twenty-one points wins the game. The bean bag toss really isn't about competition, though. It's actually about just having fun together.

Dave Roth operates a site which sells cornhole products. In addition to offering cornhole bags, the site also has rules and free building instructions.
