Can You Farm Ostritches

By: Naomi West

In the United States there are hundreds of people who own farms or ranches. On these farms they plant corn and wheat and also many other things. They likewise may nurture creatures like pigs, chickens, and cows. Every farm is distinct and some of them take care of these creatures before they sell them for meat or using their milk to produce cheese or for individuals who enjoy to drink milk.

One kind of farming that we usually do not hear much about is ostritch farming. The ostritch is a flightless bird that we all know and viewed on National Geographic episodes - but seldom are they seen in person. In fact many of us cannot even know why or how they are being farmed and being sold for meat like cows and pigs.

The ostritch is considered to be a free ranging farm animal that do not call for a good deal of maintenance once they have hit four months old. In fact several of these farmers believe that they are one of the best environmentally friendly creatures because they do not call for as much food.

More than one hundred countries have started these farms and have worked long and hard to create a living from them. In the early 1990’s it was thought to be rather profitable - but it did not take long for the business to die down because there was such a lack for their product. Without anyone to buy them most of the farms were pushed to shut down.

However, not everything is lost. The few ostritch farms that are still running in the United States are asking the authorities to make things simpler for them. They believe that if the USDA were to scrutinize the meat like they do with cows and pigs then the marketing price might be lowered. People would be more prepared to purchase from them if the price were lower. But for now all they are able to do is wait and hope that something is done speedily.

Ostritches are a type of flightless bird and are very unusual. That is why it is unusual to hear about Ostritch Farms.
