5 Tips of Productivity

By: Cole Carson

Procrastination, lack of motivation, disorganization – they get the best of all of us sometimes, and keep us form being as productive as we should. Sometimes we sit back and look at things and wonder how on earth we’re going to get them done, or what we can possibly do to make ourselves more efficient. The good news is that it’s actually very simple to be a productive, efficient person. All you have to do is know how to get started – once you do, the rest will come to you! For this reason I’m going to give you five easy steps to become a more constructive, productive human being.

1. Make sure that you are very aware of the things you need to have done. Everybody knows the most important aspect of productivity is the end result. Becoming a more productive person starts with recognizing what you want to get done and what needs to be accomplished. And this could be anything, from jogging an extra mile to starting up your own business. Just make sure that you know what your goal is. You can’t take on something you can’t see, and you can’t accomplish any goal that isn’t clear in your mind.

2. Next you’re going to write your objectives down. You see, people are generally not productive because of one of three reasons: either they can’t tell what needs to be done, they can’t keep track of all the things that need doing and so are likely to forget, or they procrastinate. We’ve taken care of the first one, and now we’re knocking the second of these problems. By writing your goals down, you are focusing on them and placing a greater significance on them in your mind. You’re going to be able to remember them, and you’ll have that piece of paper to turn to and keep yourself straight. This frees you up to plan on how you are going to go about achieving them.

3. Now for procrastination. Let’s not kid ourselves – it’s really simple to get distracted when it comes to our responsibilities. Often we can’t help but think of the things we want to do instead of what we need to do, and unless there are severe consequences for delaying our tasks, it’s easier to indulge in pleasure than in work. How do we solve this? First, make sure not to overwork yourself. Give your project everything you have, but make sure not to push yourself too hard. If you do, the work it takes to accomplish something begins to seem less and less desirable, and the urge to procrastinate grows stronger. Instead, set yourself to a loose pattern of work and pleasure. Make a commitment to work certain times, but make sure to schedule in time for the things you enjoy doing. If you aren’t missing out on the things you like to do, you aren’t as likely to avoid your responsibilities for them.

4. Even after making all the lists and schedules for getting your goals completed, the key is to actually start working towards them. This of course requires self-discipline and a good amount of willpower on your part, and nothing in any article can do that for you. But I do have a good little piece of advice to help you get things started. I once heard an old Chinese proverb that said, “It does not matter how slow you move, so long as you do not stop.” This is a great quote, and very true. Just make sure to accomplish something each and every day, no matter how big or small. Getting in the habit of achieving things each and every day is the most effective and quickest way to accomplishing all of your goals and desires.

5. Lastly, make a point to remind yourself of what you’re aiming for with these goals. Every action has a reason behind it, and people are motivated by different things. Are you aiming for that promotion at work for the gorgeous red sports car? Make sure to take note of that and dwell on the positive results your accomplishments are sure to bring! Don’t lose sight of your motivations, they will keep you excited and moving forward. Motivated people are capable of anything they set their minds to. Always keep in mind the purpose behind your actions, and you’ll find yourself much more eager to keep productive.

Attitude, mindset, and planning are the key factors in becoming a success. Take note of your goals, and commit yourself to them. Set aside time for yourself, get something accomplished each day, big or small, it doesn’t matter. Keep your motivations on the forefront of your mind and you are sure to become a happier, more productive you!
